SPIRITUALITY

The rite of Songye institution

By DR Nkamany Kabamba

BUKISHI

In the Songye linguistic homeland (if we were to respect the elliptic zone that would have covered the present area of all central and part of Eastern and Southern Africa), Bukishi is an elaborate and coherent body of ideas for the expression of the hermeneutics and notions of knowledge.

The Songye institution “Bukishi bua ntoshi (white kaolin), and bua nkula (red kaolin), is at the same time a religion as well a Songye education-system of the first and second degree respectively comprising its own secrecies and pedagogy.

However, contrary to what has been said, Bukishi is not a secret society. It is a framework the elaboration, development and dissemination of knowledge within hierarchical structures found in the Songye rites of passage program.
